PRACTICE SCHOOL - I
5-unit course
Students of all disciplines are eligible after completion of 2nd year.
Exposure oriented and aims at initiating and orienting students to professional world.
Continuous evaluation.
Monitored by resident PS faculty
Specific
Features
Aim of Practice
School-I
To train students in the art of
information collection, processing, analysis, retrieval, presentation and
documentation.
Exposure
Oriented
Exposes the students to the integrated
theme of science, i.e. how science aids man and also helps them to observe
science in action.
Offers opportunities to students for
detailed understanding of vast engineering operations introducing them to
industrial infrastructure and development.
Enables students to observe groups of
experts in management, economics, operations research, statistics, etc. working
on micro as well as macro economic problems.
Initiates students into technological
operations and problems of industrial management.
Gives them an opportunity to handle
extremely costly equipment and be familiar with the method of scientific
experimentation.
Implemented at large industrial
complexes.
Open-ended
projects
These projects are
usually study- and orientation- type, introducing students to real life work
environment which can not be simulated in the classroom.
Five Units
Students are graded
for five units in this PS course. Each student is evaluated through quizzes,
seminars, viva, group discussion, project report, diary and observation.
Operative
during summer
Every year, around 600
students from science, engineering and humanities disciplines go for their PS-I
during summer at the end of their second year. Duration of the programme is of
8 weeks. PS-I programme is being implemented at nearly 100 organizations.
Around 60 BITS faculty members thoroughly supervise the PS-I programme.
Eligibility
All students, who have
successfully completed their foundation courses which are a judicious mix of
Mathematics, Sciences, Technical Arts, Analysis and Application Oriented
Courses, Engineering Science and Humanities, are eligible to do PS-I.
Planning
Process
Planning for PS-I
begins almost one year before the programme is actually implemented. It begins
with student's eligibility check in consonance with the Institute's academic
rules. Collection of PS-I data and initiation of new PS-I stations at the
locations is then done. After confirmation of old and new stations, assessment
of the training and accommodation needs, announcement of PS-I stations is made.
Preferences of PS-I faculty and students are sought for the allotment process.
Placement of students is done by an elaborate process of analyzing student's
preferences, student's C.G.P.A., the requirements of PS-I stations,
accommodation and other facilities available. Depending on the faculty member's
individual preferences and interests PS-I stations are allotted to the PS
faculty.
PS-I
Checklist
This checklist is a
comprehensive compilation of queries about different aspects of a PS-I station.
Each PS-I student is given a copy of the checklist at the beginning of the
Practice School programme. Some of the fields for which queries are listed in
the checklist are:
Product Survey
Quality Control
Research and Development
Infrastructural Facilities
Production
Organizational Structure
Engineering Design and Development
Consultancy
Project Engineering
Management Information Systems
Raw Materials
Instrumentation and Control
PS-I
